Current First

If you don't know almost immediately where this first line is from I suggest running off to your nearest bookstore.

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as I have been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve o'clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously."

Dickens, Charles - David Copperfield

Personally I think it is only beaten by the first line of A Tale of Two Cities.

I love Charles Dickens' novels. I read David Copperfield when I was in high school, but haven't picked it up again since. In college I read Hard Times, which was interesting. And of course, I love A Christmas Carol.

But one of my favorite memories related to his books comes from my early childhood. My mom used to read classic novels to my sister and me and one of our favorites was Oliver Twist. When my kids were emptying out some of my many boxes of books onto their bookshelf upstairs the other night, I happened to run across it. Now, to make the time to read it to them... :)

Kay,

Great response. I try to fit in a couple of Dickens' works each year . . . trying to get all of them in in one life time. Good thing he has a pretty heady bibliography. Strangely A Christmas Carol has not made it on my list yet. Would have been so apropos right now too.

Thanks again for the comments. I hope to hear from you again soon.
