Sadie is (Always) there

Been thinking more and more about trust and character. It’s been in the news lately so maybe it’s trickling through my subconscious to my thoughts.

I’m surprised by how few people I can truly count on anymore. So many people say “I promise” but mean "maybe" . . . or “always” and mean "sometimes" . . . worse . . . they say this then completely blow off that thing they said "I promise" or "always" about within mere days. I remember I had this difficulty when I first got out of the military. In our unit if you were ordered to do something or if you said you would do something you had to do it. It was not even a question. It got done.

When I got out I struggled with this aspect of life. So many people said this or that then did the opposite. I know I started doing the same thing. Over promising and under delivering. I did it a lot. Now I think I’ve hit an equilibrium. But I’m stunned to see how many I thought I could rely on I can’t.

I think I’ll include that in my next novel. In my second novel (see here) I write about isolation and betrayal inside a family. In my third novel I focused on the nine circles of hell and how focusing on one thing is detrimental to those around you (see here).  I think in this next one it will be about betrayal of trust and inability to be counted on.

One aspect I enjoy is Sadie. Dogs can be counted on. Squirrels are crazy everyone knows they can’t be trusted to keep their word. Ducks too apparently can’t be relied upon. Dogs however can’t be beat. Sadie is always there and happy. Even tired and down she can be counted on for a pet, a lick, a tail wag and a happy smile. There will be a dog as a stabilizer in my novel.

Long and short.... surprised that when folks say “promise” they mean maybe. But happy that Sadie’s always is always there!
