We are doing alot of reading and critical reading for class lately. Although there are no specific outside texts that I use when I think about critical reading and critical analysis, but I took to heart something that our professor said at the beginning of the class.
Prior to taking this class I was being very specific and targeted in my approach to reading texts that might provide support for my area of interest, Virtual Reality and Spaced Practice for Refinery Technicians. Earlier in the class our professional mentioned that we as students might read a dozen articles that might not have much meaning to us specifically, but will most likely lead to other texts and other articles that will be more meaningful.
I had already started to do this, but hearing from our professor about how full my funnel might need to be to have an output that is worthwhile, certainly helped me realize that my method had merit and credence. One thing I also started to do before the holidays was begin to read dissertations that I could find online that had similar subjects, then see how those dissertations used articles and foundational texts to make their points. Has anything concrete come from that reading? Not yet, but I'm broadening my scope and seeing more of the landscape in front of me.
Additionally, I find that I don't give up on articles as quickly since hearing from our professor about how much reading will go into this process. Hearing that provided some aspect of carte blanche to continue reading more and to delve into articles not for the main points and presentation fo the thesis, but rather to determine how they frame their arguments, and what resources they use to create their arguments and bolster their analysis.
