I hated the end of Semper Fi, the first in the books on the Corps in WEB Griffen's series. I posted about the first line a few days ago, but the last line and the last few chapters are horrid and almost ruin the book. The only good news is that they make me want to go read the rest of the series.
Why? What's wrong with the end?
Here you have an amazing moment in history. The invasion of Lingayen Gulf and Santos Bay and you have a Marine in the middle of the invasion and then stuck behind enemy lines. How amazing a moment is that? How many great plotlines could come out of that. Guerrilla warfare, man vs man, man vs nature, escape and evasion tactics, on and on and on.
Instead of any of this what does WEB Griffen do?
He "transports" the main character back to New York after he saves one of the other main characters. That's it. All those wonderful opportunities are wasted and not used at all. Just Boom, one character telling the other "Get out of here, leave me, get back to the states." Then the end of a chapter, the start of another, the main character is back in New York. BLECH!
