Lost in a Good Book

I had a chance to read Lost in Shangri-La the other day and it was so fun to read, for many reasons. First, it was written about an era I love to read about. Secondly, it reminded me of the time I was in Panama. And third, it reminded me about how crazy life can be.

It’s a great book, although I might not trust the author again. The first few pages read like the story will be an epic adventure on the scale of Shackleton, or The Kingdom of Ice. I wrote about The Kingdom of Ice a few months back, and wow, talk about an epic. The arctic explorers get trapped on their boat in the arctic ice for two years then have to make their way to Siberia then walk to civilization! That’s not this book.

Basically, it’s spans a month or two. Right! See. That’s not an epic. Also, although it sounds like a rough time, there was a documentary produced of the challenges. I watched the documentary after reading the book and sorry, but it looks like easy going for the most part.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve lived and worked in the jungle for several weeks and it’s not fun by a long stretch. In fact, triple canopy jungle of the type we had to work in in Panama was downright dangerous! But, go watch the film clip. It looks almost fun from that perspective.

I do love that era through, the WWII era. My favorite books to read are those about the Korean War, but the best era to read about might be this era. It was so simple (seemingly) and cordial. More on that later.
