I got a chance to review Crossing the Line by Joy Slaughter as a part of a “book reviewing” and “author’s support” group that I’m in. I liked it from the start. It’s fun and moves at a nice-ish clip and the plot and writing aren’t terrible . . . In fact that pretty good.
Adam are a myriad reasons I like it, but perhaps the one reason I like it most is that I could have easily gone this route with my career.
Have I ever told you I was an EMT? EMT-B (Basic) to be exact. I wish, having the opportunity to look back and softly regret, that I had stayed in as an EMT and become a paramedic in the Army. I would have liked that. The other day I wrote how I hated the shooting. I would have enjoyed the paramedic-ing I think.
After the Army I went to apply at the fire department. I aced their qualifications and interview. I was surprised that they never called. Found out later that I had been giving all of the job applications at that time my father’s unlisted number that didn’t have voice mail. I received a nasty letter from the fire department months later telling me they were giving up on me. I always wondered what would have happened in my life had I given them the right number.
But Crossing the Line is a fun book, about serious problems in the lives of paramedics. It reminds me of my first novel. It’s s a bit clunky, but a good first effort and fun to read.
I think I’m gonna contact ole Joy Slaughter and see if she needs a writing buddy.
