My colleague Susanne is doing research on teachers and bilingual educators. She believes that not enough is done to prepare and keep teachers well trained in bilingual teaching.
We deal with something similar, although not exactly. We have thousands of non-english speaking workers that we support. And in many cases we cater to their language needs with our training. Although we may provide training in their language, Safety Data Sheets that they must use to stay safe, processes and procedures on safe operations, and other safety signs and equipment are not provided in their language.
We have a closed system in terms of safety standards and communications, but a huge cohort of willing workers who could help the industry, that can't get in. I'd love to hear more about her research at the end of our class to discuss what innovations she's playing with to determine how we at my organization might better create an open system that includes these workers?
Maybe it includes user created content? Technological innovation to translate more quickly?
Or even just more programs to create a safety language that has no restrictions on language comprehension?
