Hard Truths

As the savvy reader will know, I use this space to catalog information for novels and ideas for stories. There my Great Lines thread (HERE), my Last Lines thread (HERE), Evershade thread (HERE) and now the Everyday Sox thread (HERE).

Well, as a part of the story I'm developing for Everyday Sox - it's already written, but it needs to be refined - there is a character who is the foundation for the main character, the lodestone, the stabilizing agent. He's a speaker of plain truths.

Bartenders and Restaurant Owners in Movies

Anyone who knows me or has read this blog for a bit knows that I love rom-com movies. Always have. In fact one dream of mine . . . it's to write a novel that gets turned into a rom-com. It's a lifelong dream which means it may take all my life to achieve.

I could see Everyday Sox becoming one of these.

Funny Ole World (with Funny Ole People)

I ran into this the other day and it floored me a bit. Isn't it funny how people act and react and expect things from others, all the while they're probably expecting the same from you?

It's funny how relationships work and don't work. It shouldn't be so hard should it? People who get along should just allow themselves to get along.

I May Be a Weenie . . .

To begin, I work in a very macho industry. Petrochem and refining is right up there in many respects to upstream oil and gas drilling or offshore deckhand and roustabouts. I support and work with guys who turn wrenches and have grime and much on their hands.

Secondly, I have a background of being an Airborne Ranger badass. I was a door kicker and the first man in the stack for years in the 2nd Ranger Battalion. I was a Spec Ops Commando. Doesn't get too much more badass than that.

I bring all this up, because I don't necessarily like the same types of movies that my colleagues and compatriots like. Never have been. Anyone who knows me knows this. I shut down for a month or more before Christmas exclusively to watch Lifetime and Hallmark channel movies. I promoted the idea of a blog to rate and review Lifetime and Hallmark movies. Look through this blog and you'll see that it's littered with reviews of rom-coms, and romance and more. Hell, one of my life's goals is to write a novel that eventually get's turned into a Lifetime or Hallmark movie . . . anyone heard of Everyday Sox? That's the one!

In 2001 I saw the movie Amélie. Loved it. Reminiscent of my time in Paris, well acted, funny and intriguing story, quirky, and a cute girl. What's not to like.

Now?

Well, now I think my favorite movie (if we exclude Rear Window, Fury Road, North by Northwest, etc etc) is Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

Who knew right? Maybe I have a thing for cute Parisian girls (especially if they have ponytails). Or maybe I love the swings from high to low, or great stories that have a tear-filled payoff. Who knows what it is, but put this sucker on the list for me!

Blocking Out My Novel

Right now I’m working on three different stories, all of which I’m hoping to turn into finished novels. I figure that since I’m getting to the end of my PhD and there will be fewer and fewer posts on adult learning,  . . . Hopefully there will be just as many on self-authorship, . . . But in the spirit of finding daily content . . . I guess posting about those three (hopeful) novels will keep my blog filled.

So I guess I’ll give a quick synopsis of each and then throughout the days further develop each book as we go.

Been a While Since the Last Evershade

I know, I know . . . it's been a while (a LONG while) since I posted any poetry or anything regarding these Evershades (see HERE). I've been working on a new series, Everyday Sox (see HERE).

BUT! I came across another couple and I just couldn't help myself in posting them and adding to this little series.

The first, is a part of that image. Isn't it a wonderful quote. I've heard it stated as "love is composed of two bodies inhabiting one soul" which is just as poignant, but I thought that little image up there was pretty good too.

Thank You for the Happiest Year of My Life

Great moments can come from anywhere. This morning I was getting the kiddo ready for school and out of the blue he says: "Alexa play ... thank you for the happiest year of my life." (File this one in the everyday Sox category cause I think I know how I'll use this in that novel! See HERE).

Now I don't know about you, but I'd never heard it before and I didn't expect a twelve-year-old to have such a nuanced view of music, life, love, and the world. Truthfully, I don't know where my kids get their musical talent. The oldest is loving band, concert band, and symphonic band and will probably get a scholarship in his instrument for higher education. Which I think is cool.

Now the younger, who I always thought would be more on the sporty side of things, is digging music too. He still kills it on the soccer field, the basketball court, football field, and in any other sport, but then there are times when he gets out his instrument and hits it out of the park. The other day, in the middle of my class, I took a break and went downstairs and there was the older one teaching the younger one an ersatz class on time and measures while reading music. Unreal!

Regardless, back to the story. Here's this twelve-year-old cat who asks Alexa not to play Imagine Dragons, or anything else of that ilk, but asks for ... thank you for the happiest year of my life.

So I listened.

Bowled over is an understatement. Who knew he was such an old soul! The lyrics are impactful, but one or two lines really got me.

… I'm really on the ropes this time
I've been fighting all my life for you
I never should have said goodbye
But maybe that's what stupid people do
… 'Cause you gave me peace
And I wasted it
I'm here to admit
That you were my medicine
Oh, I couldn't quit
And I'm down on my knees again
Asking
For nothing
… Thank you for the happiest year of my life
Thank you for the happiest year of my life, ooh
… Ooh, ooh, ooh
… Don't think I could forgive myself
I'm sorry for the ways that I used you
And I could care less right now
But you know, you hurt me pretty good too
… Yeah, we made each other bleed
And we tasted it
I'm here to admit
That you were my medicine
Oh, love, I couldn't quit
And I'm down on my knees again
… Thank you for the happiest year of my life, oh
Thank you for the happiest year of my life, ooh
… So wake me up when they build that time machine
I want to go back
Wake me up when you were sleeping next to me
'Cause I really loved you, ooh

By the way ... if during the song, while that little kiddo is singing those lyrics, and he's soulful, and into the music, eyes closed, really belting out that ballad ... and you start saying "your welcome" to him after each time he says "thank you for the happiest year of my life" ... he won't find it as funny as you do. Just saying.

New Series Start and Aces of Writing

The last series I kept updated petered out, so I'm starting a new one. Thinking of naming it "Everyday Sox" for reasons that should not be at all clear to anyone but me. It's a place to put not just "Great Lines" (see HERE for more of those) but also poetic asides I run across, little mementos of writing I see, or other things that I come across that are poignant and deserve being remembered.

This first one is from a book I am reading currently. No,  . . . not a Dick Francis book. This is a non-fiction History book I'm slowly wading through, not a novel I blaze through like a runaway horse. I was a double major in college . . . English and History. Every now and then I have to feed that side of my psyche.
