I started reading another book on writing. This one is called Intuitive Writing by Jaqueline Fisch. It’s supposed to be a book about how to write more and with more focus. What I’ve found is that when she says “writing” she means all writing. Copy writing, writing emails, newsletters, etc. etc. Now she does talk about creative writing, which is why I picked this up, but the author means it all.
She also encourages the reader to complete the chapter exercises. So I’m going to use this space to do just that.
Chapter 1 Exercises
What was your purpose for picking up this book? What do you hope to achieve?
Good question. I hope to inspire my writing. Especially my creative writing. I found that though my PhD studies that reading as much as I did really helped me stay motivated, reflect, and be more productive. I’m hoping that reading more regarding creative writing will have the same results. Not only keep me motivated and more productive but also write better and more professionally.
What have you tried before?
I’ve tried just writing on my own. I’ve tried blocking off time on my schedule to write. I’ve tried writing groups. This will be just more more thing that I can try. Maybe it will add to the whole. Probably won’t be a silver bullet, but might help.
How does perfectionism show up in your writing?
As I’m writing this little story about the welder, I found that I was having a hard time figure in out where to go next, or how the story might unfurl. So, I created a little outline, some story notes to help me figure out how the story should go. That’s a bit of my perfectionism showing up.
What writing are you procrastinating about right now?
I’m procrastinating about writing on this welder story. I should be writing more. I should have a goal for word count. I should be chugging away. I’m not. This might help.
What will happen if you stop procrastinating? What’s possible?
I can finish the welder story. I could finish Sunset Perfect. I could actually get to that goal of writing a novel a year.
So, I mention above that I wrote a little outline for the welder story. It’s not much to look at, but it’s a work in progress. I’ll be posting more of this and these notes as I move forward. And in six months or so, we will see if it works.
