Another resolution that I have for 2026, is to run a fun run a month. I did this same thing a couple of years ago, and I almost made it through the whole year, too. I think I missed one in August. Apparently, there aren't many fun runs in August in Houston.
I recycled it the next year. That year it was 10K a month. It could be a 10K run, or two 5Ks. Again, I think I almost made it, or I did make it through the whole year.
The last fun run I remember doing, well, the last two, both of which I hated, were small, local runs that were not well organized or populated.
Needless to say, I've learned from my experiences. This fun run resolution will be similar and less exacting. The characteristics of this resolution are:
- I will sign up for and run one fun run a month.
- It can be either 5K or 10K, or anywhere in between, and if I'm feeling frisky, longer. 5K is the minimum.
- I'm going to try and limit myself to only large events. I don't really like the smaller ones. They're not well-staged or organized.
- I will go if I sign up. The last few I didn't complete the run, just signed up. Nothing worse. But again, they were small and poorly organized.
- I will sign up early and ensure I have an appointment on the calendar.
- I will not beat myself up over times or distance or having to walk halfway. The goal is to participate in an event and run with others, pushing myself beyond my usual runs.
- And . . . as a reward for having completed the full event, . . . afterward I'm allowed to find a Whataburger and a Starbucks, and sit back and relax with a BOB (breakfast on a bun) and a Mocha. (This one could seem controversial, when you consider one I have not yet stated about weight loss, but I need a "reward system," and if I run a 10K, I should burn about 700 calories. So if I limit it to one BOB and one Mocha, it should not only be a good reward, but also a push in terms of calories). However, if I don't participate in the event for any reason, I won't receive a reward.
So, those are the "rules of the road" or, in this case, "rules of the race." There will be other resolutions forthcoming, but these are the first two.
2026 Resolutions:
- Roomba Daily
- Fun Run Once a Month
