I just wrote a passage for my daily writing goal, and realized that I could have used this advice to use the word Not. This isn't directly from my writing, but let's pretend it is.
"Ralston was tall, bald, and his build was that of a bodybuilder mixed with a bull-dozer."
Not great, but I needed something to work off of. But let's apply the "Not" function.
"Ralston was not a small person, in the world he inhabited he was usually the tallest in the area. It wasn't just that aspect that made Ralston stand out because he was not someone who was missed easily, instead, he was a bull-dozer in a barren field."
So, that's more intriguing, isn't it? Apparently the "not" gives the reader a binary to work off of. But there's more to it than just that, think of all the things you can do.
"Ralston was not a small man, in fact he would not have been classified as not a tall man either. He was a gargantuan man. He towered over others at all times. When he walked down a crowded sidewalk people didn't just step out of his way, his bull-dozer-esque physique inspired others to take several steps to the side."
I'm going to apply NOT a LOT more.
