As a blossoming, somewhat seasoned writer and self-publisher, I get asked often for advice from other writers. Sometimes I'm asked to take a look at a book and give it a review. Such is the case.
You know what . . . despite what might jump to mind when you first look at the title and the cover, it's a darn good book. In fact, I'm a bit jealous. Why?
First, the writing is clean precise, and easy to read. I read a book the other day that was so poorly written I couldn't get through Chapter 1! It was horrid writing in my opinion. Some of the worst I've seen in a while. Even the main character, "Honne" how does the reader pronounce that? And immediately the writing is clunky and I'm lost in terms of the action completely. I even went back and tried to read it again. Still lost.
But let's get back to the story that I think is good. This one about Hula. Here, the story too is light and fun. A bit silly, but hey this is a romance. It's like reading a Lifetime movie. I LOVE Lifetime movies. I'm actually quite jealous of Miss North. I'd love to be able to just sit down and write a Lifetime movie. I have it in my notes to write one, just need to get this sucker off my list that I'm writing now, but man-oh-man, it's a light fun read, especially when it's inserted in between WEB Griffin and Clancy books.
The second thing, let's address the cover. It looks like my covers from 15 years ago. I've learned a lot from the past 15 years. It's better to make them more like covers you'd see on the shelf at the store. It's better to go to a pro for this thing. That's the first thing I'd tell Miss North.
The last thing I would say is that the title is a bit too hokey. I'd give it some serious thought. Sunset Perfect would be an IDEAL title for this sucker. I'll sell it to Miss North for only a few several thousand dollars.
